The Crimp Gauge

The crimp gauge is a simple tool that is used to assure packaged bottles containing product have a proper seal between the crown portion of the cap and the bottle closure during packaging. The crimp gauge, sometimes referred to as a crown gauge, is often a stainless steel, handheld tool that is commercially available for under fifty dollars. Commercially-available gauges are often available to test multiple different crimp diameters, and can thus be used on different types of bottles. Specifically, the tool determines the crimp diameter after the crown is applied during packaging. A proper crimp diameter is necessary to prevent bottles from leaking and becoming contaminated. Proper use of a crimp gauge to assure a true seal during the packaging process prevents the possibility of spoilage via microorganisms entering the product after bottling.
